§ 01 — Principles

Calm, direct, precise.

Most legal matters become expensive when they drift. The remedy is not more language — it is more structure. Clear reads, scoped work, written fee arrangements, and follow- through on deliverables.

Northline does not use the word “specialist”. We do not promise outcomes. We do not send correspondence to inflate a fee. What we produce is counsel you can act on, with the lawyer, scope, fee, and next step identified before work begins.

  1. Structured reads

Every matter gets the same skeleton: facts, position, leverage, timing, route. Same rigour whether the fee is $275 or $25,000.

  2. Scoped work

Nothing begins without a written fee arrangement. Growth and complex matters move onto a retainer with published hours.

  3. Plain language

Memos are short and readable. Risk is explained in practical terms. If a clause is important, it is called out with the reason.

  4. Honest referrals

Out-of-scope matters are referred early, not at the end. Litigation that needs trial counsel gets the right counsel, not us stretching.

  5. Conflicts first

Conflict checks run before a consultation is booked. No engagement begins until written confirmation is sent.

  6. Confidentiality

Confidential materials are not reviewed until we confirm we can act. Secure intake follows written engagement, not the inquiry form.

§ 02 — Standards

Named lawyer. Written scope.

A deliberately small practice led by Maya I. Chen. Public claims stay conservative, but the operating details are concrete: conflicts first, written scope, and one accountable matter lead.

Principal Lawyer · Barrister & Solicitor (Ontario). Northline is built around direct lawyer involvement: the person responsible for the legal read, strategy, and deliverable is identified before the work starts.

The practical promise is continuity: no anonymous intake queue, no handoff without context, and no work opened until conflicts are cleared.

Scope before work starts

Consultation, fixed-fee review, negotiation, and advisory work each start with written scope, fees, assumptions, and the next deliverable. If a matter needs different counsel, that is handled early.

Public proof is deliberately concrete: office details, fee ranges, response windows, written retainers, and process standards the firm can actually keep.

§ 03 — The office

Financial District, by appointment.

120 Adelaide Street West, Suite 2500, Toronto, ON M5H 1T1. In-person consultations are scheduled only after conflict checks and written confirmation. Consultations are available by video across Ontario and by phone when appropriate.

§ Work with Northline

Bring the matter. We will bring the structure.

A consultation is the door. Most engagements start there — with a real read of the situation, options, and the next move you can act on.
